Effective Camping and Hiking Gear Organization Tips

Are you an adventurer at heart? Someone who loves spending time in the great outdoors, surrounded by nature’s beauty? Well, if that’s the case, then you probably enjoy camping and hiking just as much as I do. But there’s one thing that can really put a damper on these fun activities – disorganized gear. Trust me, there’s nothing worse than rummaging through a jumbled mess of camping and hiking gear when you’re excited to head out on your next adventure. That’s why I’m here to share some tips on how to organize your gear effectively, so you can spend more time enjoying the great outdoors and less time searching for that elusive headlamp.

This weekend I took the time to finally organize all our camping and hiking gear. It is still a work in progress but the basement bedroom (and sometime tornado shelter) looks so much better!

Organizing the camping gear.
Before – Unorganized and gear is everywhere.

First things first, you need to invest in some clear tubs. These are a game-changer when it comes to organizing camping gear. Not only do they allow you to easily see what’s inside each tub, but they also protect your gear from dust, dirt, and moisture. I recommend labeling each tub with the specific category of gear it contains, such as cooking equipment, tents, sleeping bags, or hiking boots. This way, you’ll always know where to find what you need, and you’ll never have to waste time searching through multiple tubs just to locate your camp stove.

Shelving is another fantastic option for organizing your camping gear. Install some sturdy shelves in your garage or basement, and use them to store your tubs of gear. This not only keeps everything neat and tidy but also makes it easier to access your gear whenever you need it. Plus, it’s a great way to maximize the space in your storage area. You’ll be surprised at how much gear you can fit onto a single shelf!

Now, let’s talk about sleeping bags. These can be a bit tricky to store because you want to avoid compressing the down. Compressed down loses its loft, which affects its ability to keep you warm. So, instead of cramming your sleeping bags into a tight stuff sack, try hanging them instead. Find a clothesline or a sturdy hook in your storage area, and hang your sleeping bags by their loops or straps. Did your bag come with a separate large storage bag? Mine did so this allowed me to sort them “fluffed up”. By hanging them or using the large storage bag provided this allows the down insulation to remain fluffy and effective, ensuring a cozy night’s sleep on your next camping trip.

Cleaning your gear before storing it is another essential step in the organization process. Let’s face it – camping and hiking can get dirty and messy. From mud-covered boots to greasy camp stoves, your gear can take a beating out in the wilderness. So, take the time to clean everything thoroughly before packing it away. Wipe down your cooking equipment, scrub your hiking boots, and air out your sleeping bags. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later when you pull out fresh, clean gear for your next adventure.

Lastly, let’s discuss backpacks. These essential pieces of gear tend to take up quite a bit of space. But fear not! There’s a simple solution to this problem – hang your backpacks. By utilizing hooks or hangers, you can store your backpacks vertically, which not only saves space but also helps to maintain their shape. Plus, it makes them easily accessible when you’re gearing up for your next hiking expedition. No more digging through a pile of backpacks to find the right one!

After Organization – Added another shelf and a hanging rack.

So, there you have it – some helpful tips for organizing your camping and hiking gear. By investing in clear tubs, utilizing shelves, hanging your sleeping bags, cleaning your gear, and hanging your backpacks, you’ll have a well-organized and easily accessible arsenal of outdoor equipment. Say goodbye to the days of searching for that misplaced headlamp or struggling to stuff your sleeping bag into a tiny stuff sack. With these organizational strategies, you can focus on what really matters – enjoying the great outdoors and creating unforgettable adventures. Now, get out there and soak up nature’s beauty!
