Picking the Perfect Campsite

When you’re choosing a campsite, there are a few things to keep in mind if you’re camping solo. First, you’ll want to make sure the campsite is well-lit and visible from a distance. This will help you feel more secure, especially at night.

You’ll also want to choose a campsite that has easy access to amenities like restrooms and water faucets. If you’re planning on hiking during your trip, ensure the campsite is close to trails. It should also be near other attractions if you are exploring.

Packing the Right Gear

One of the most important things to do when solo camping is to pack the right gear. First, you’ll need a tent big enough for one person – personally, I chose a two-person tent!  This way I have plenty of room for my gear and it’s not so cramped that it is uncomfortable. Keeping your gear inside the tent with you helps reduce fear. You won’t worry that your gear will get wet if it rains. If you need something in the middle of the night, you won’t have to face a swarm of mosquitoes.

You should also bring along a sleeping bag and warm clothing for nighttime temperatures.  If parking will be close to the campsite bringing luxury items can make the trip even more relaxing.  A luxury item is a cot or lounge chair.  Relaxation is the goal after all!

Don’t forget to bring something for starting a fire. Most campsites may provide some firewood for a campfire, but check first if not sure. Firewood can be purchased but remember to never transport firewood from your home to camp. Doing so may bring in harmful bugs which harm the forest you are visiting. Also, you will need a lighter or other types of kindling to get a good fire started.

Black Beard has some great fire starters to make things a bit easier especially if you arrive at camp late at night.

Other essential items include a first-aid kit, bug spray, sunscreen, and plenty of food and water. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and bring more gear than you think you’ll need. Set up your tent at home so that you are familiar with its setup.  This also gives you a chance to make sure that all tent stakes, tie-downs, rain fly, or other tent options are accounted for and included.  Check for any holes or tears that may need to be repaired before the trip.  Make sure you have some extra cord just in case the weather is windy so there is an option to better secure the tent if needed.

If you plan to cook out while camping don’t forget to bring what you need. A small skillet, plates, grilling utensils, paper towels, napkins, forks, spoons, and all the fixings!

Need to keep in touch while camping? One little gear item I use is a small power generator and a solar panel that provides enough power to keep my phone and tablet charged. Makes for a great movie night when you just want to relax and not disconnect from the outside world completely.

I also use it to recharge a small fan in the tent which helped on those hot nights when there wasn’t a breeze.  Who said you had to rough it when camping?  This little power station will also power a small hot plate, coffee maker, or even a blender for those camping margaritas!

Safety

Camping can be an enjoyable experience, but it is important to be safe and comfortable while you are out in the wilderness. Here are a few tips to help you have a safe and comfortable camping trip:

  • Choose a safe campsite: When you are choosing a campsite, look for a flat, open area that is away from cliffs, tall trees, and bodies of water.
  • Set up your tent: Make sure to set up your tent first to keep you dry and protected from the elements.
  • Pack proper clothing: Bring clothes that will keep you warm and dry, as well as closed-toed shoes and a hat to protect you from the sun.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Be aware of your surroundings at all times, and be especially cautious of wildlife.

So whether you’re an experienced camper or a complete beginner, don’t be afraid to try something new and exciting.
