These past 12 or so days has been a mix of recovery, quiet workdays, and preparing for the changing seasons.
💼 Work Life

Work continues to be quiet due to the ongoing government furlough. We are still busy so don’t let the “quiet” fool you. The end of the year always seems to be busy for one reason or another.
I feel for those civilian employees who aren’t getting paid, especially with the holiday season approaching—it’s a tough time for many. The news does seem to indicate a possible solution is in the works. What gets me is that the news outlets say the government is closed. The government isn’t closed, but working at reduced staff with a percentage of the workforce on furlough. Our military and government contracted personnel are still working. How many are affected?

On top of that, the building’s heating and cooling systems have been unpredictable:
- Last week, the office was in the low 80s °F (~27 °C)
- Then it dropped into the low 70s °F (~22 °C)
- Now, with a freeze warning in place, it’s anyone’s guess what the office temperature will be next
To prepare, I’m bringing my heated throw blanket since space heaters aren’t allowed at our desks.
Blankets are the next best thing!

❄️ Weather Watch

Last night was the coldest so far. I do think we broke a record for low temps in November. By tomorrow natures mood swings will be back to our normal temps during the day with chilly but not too cold nights. Hopefully these wild weather swings will not cause a increase of cold and flu outbreaks.
🩹 Healing Update

I’m doing pretty well after the Mohs procedure to remove a small skin cancer from the bridge of my nose. More about Mohs can be found here.
The surgery was actually done on Halloween, which felt sort of fitting given my appearance afterwards with a fresh scar down my nose and the huge bandage covering.
What started as a small flat red flaky spot the size of a pea is now a thin 1 inch scar running down my nose.
On the way home, we even stopped at Huddle House for a bite to eat before all the feeling returned to my nose and face. Not sure what Huddle House is? Thankfully, I only missed a couple of days of work, and since the procedure was on a Friday, I had the weekend to rest. I ended up taking Monday off too since my eyes were still swelled. The healing is going smoothly, and once it’s fully recovered, it should just be a faint line. Please remember to wear sunscreen! More about why sunscreen is important.
All in all, it’s been a week of healing, adjusting, and preparing—both at work and at home. Let’s get well so we can enjoy this perfect camping weather!
