Cardinal | Bird Folklore

This winter I’ve been making sure to keep the bird feeders filled so that any birds that may visit the back yard will have a nice meal. Winters here are mild but the birds always love a free buffet of seeds and suet.

At times when the feeder does go empty I can hear the birds nearby chirping. At times it feels like they are trying to remind me that their feeder is empty. “Come on! Open that garage door and get that feed out here ASAP!”

After refilling the feeders this week I was surprised to see the cardinals were the first to return in just a few minutes. They paused for a few minutes watching me return to the garage and then began taking seeds to their partners nearby.

I’ve always thought that seeing a cardinal was a good sign and maybe a visit from a loved one who is no longer living. Where this belief came from I’m not sure. Maybe it was something told to me when I was young or even something mentioned by others. Where ever the belief came from I’ll always see those little red birds as a sign of “Everything will be OK. We are here checking in on you.”
