River Glass Upcycling: Transforming Old Bottles and Glass Fragments

Every time I go up by the river I pick up little pieces of glass. Mostly for safety purposes but sometimes I do find something old and odd that I like to keep. Such as old bottles, oyster shell buttons, fishing lures, and sometimes driftwood.

I’ve kept a lot of the blue glass and the older glass pieces I have brought home so I’ve decided to try to do a little experiment. Otherwise, I’m just holding onto a box of dirty broken glass.

The larger pieces I broke into several smaller pieces. Each piece was carefully cleaned to remove the excess dirt. I added the glass to my rock tumbler. Since I’ve never tumbled glass before I planned on letting it tumble for about a week and see what happens. To start I add enough glass to the tumbler until it is about a third full.  The glass pieces were no bigger than a quarter to half a dollar.  I added water to cover the glass and a little play sand.  I did check on the progress halfway through just in case things had moved along faster than expected.

A week or so later I have the results! I know it’s cheating, but now the broken glass can be used in other craft projects. Over all, it did not take as long as I thought it would.

Below are a few of my favorite finds which did not require tumbling to be appreciated.

These two bottles were exposed after some recent river flooding.
