Homemade Travel Sheet

A travel sheet is also known as a sleep sheet or sleeping bag liner. It is a lightweight and compact bedding accessory. This item is designed to offer a clean and comfortable sleeping surface while traveling. It typically resembles a rectangular sack or envelope made of soft and breathable fabric, like cotton, silk, or polyester. Travel sheets come in various sizes and styles to accommodate different preferences and travel needs.

Here are some key features and uses of a travel sheet:

  1. Hygiene: Travel sheets act as a protective barrier between you and dirty or unsanitary bedding in hotels. They also offer protection in hostels or other accommodations. By sleeping inside a travel sheet, you can avoid direct contact with bed surfaces. This reduces exposure to allergens, bed bugs, or other irritants.
  2. Comfort: Travel sheets can enhance comfort by adding an extra layer of softness and insulation to your sleeping arrangement. They can also help regulate body temperature and offer a familiar sleeping environment, especially in unfamiliar or uncomfortable settings.
  3. Versatility: Travel sheets are versatile and suitable for various types of travel. They are perfect for backpacking, camping, hostel-hopping, or staying in budget accommodations. They are lightweight, compact, and easy to pack, making them ideal for travelers who value mobility and convenience.
  4. Warmth: In cooler climates or air-conditioned rooms, a travel sheet can give extra warmth. It does this without the bulk of a traditional sleeping bag or heavy blankets. Some travel sheets are designed with thermal or moisture wicking properties to keep you comfortable in a range of temperatures.
  5. Easy to Clean: Most travel sheets are machine washable, making them easy to clean and keep during your travels. This feature ensures that you can enjoy a fresh and hygienic sleeping surface wherever you go.

A travel sheet is practical and essential for travel. It helps keep hygiene and comfort. It also ensures convenience while sleeping away from home. Whether you’re embarking on a backpacking adventure or staying in budget accommodations, a travel sheet is worthwhile. It’s also useful if you’re seeking a more comfortable sleeping experience during travel. Consider adding it to your packing list.

Let’s Make One!

Instead of purchasing a travel sheet and spending anywhere from $15 to $60 I decided to make my own. I picked up two flat sheets for $2 at a local thrift store. The sheets are like new and I didn’t have to orphan any of my existing sheet sets.

One flat sheet was solid white and queen size. Mine is a vintage gold and yellow striped full-size sheet. Both are percale and feel great! I love these sheets that are soft, smooth, and cool to the touch.

I folded one flat sheet in half along the long edge. I placed the right side (the pretty edges) on the inside. Laying it on the floor I measured where my waist would be if lying on the sheet. Using my sewing machine I stitched across the bottom and up the side to where my mark was placed.

I reinforced where the stitching ended just so it wouldn’t pull apart. Once finished I turned it right side out. It’s like a sheet sleeping bag or sleeping bag liner. Fifteen minutes later I was done and now we have our travel sheets!

I did not shorten the top. There is plenty of room to cover my pillow and cover the bed. This way, I don’t have to lay directly on the mattress. I repeated the process with the white sheet.

Counting down the days until we travel to Ireland with everything we need just in our backpacks! I’m not sure how it’s all going to play out but I’m excited either way! Backpacking Ireland and staying in hostels…who would have thought!

Creating a travel sheet from a bed sheet is a simple process that requires minimal sewing skills. Here are step-by-step directions:

Materials needed:

  1. Bed sheet (preferably lightweight and breathable, like cotton percale)
  2. Sewing machine or needle and thread
  3. Scissors
  4. Safety Pins
  5. Measuring tape

Step 1: Choose the Right Sheet

  • Select a bed sheet that is lightweight, breathable, and preferably made of cotton. Avoid sheets with heavy fabrics or excessive embellishments.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Fabric

  • Lay the bed sheet flat on a clean, flat surface.
  • Use a measuring tape to measure and mark the desired length of your travel sheet. A standard size for a travel sheet is around 90 inches long, but you can adjust this based on your preferences.
  • Use scissors to cut along the marked line to create your travel sheet. I left ours long so that it could also cover a pillow if needed.
  • Fold the sheet in half long ways.  Pin together to see if the width is comfortable for sleeping.  Think of this as a sleeping bag made from a sheet.

Step 3: Hem the Edges and Sew the Footbox

  • To prevent fraying and give your travel sheet a clean finish, you can choose to hem the edges that were cut.
  • Fold over each edge of the fabric by about 1/4 to 1/2 inch and press it down with an iron to create a crease.
  • Sew along the folded edge using a straight stitch on your sewing machine or by hand with a needle and thread.
  • If a sleeping bag type sheet is desired then fold in half and stitch across the bottom and up the open side about a third of the way.

Step 5: Finish and Test

  • Trim any excess thread and inspect your travel sheet for any loose stitches or uneven edges.
  • Your travel sheet is now ready to use! Test it out by placing it on a mattress or sleeping pad.

With these simple steps, you can create a lightweight and portable travel sheet from a bed sheet that will provide you with comfort and protection during your travels.
