The past few weeks we have been under a lot of weather warnings and advisories due to extreme heat and humidity. I love being outdoors but the older I get the less tolerant of the heat and humidity. Really? People say things like “I never remember it being this hot before!” or “Why do summers feel like they are worse each year?” or “Growing up we never ran the air conditioning and no one complained.”
Truth, I do remember times during the 1970 – 1980s when we would keep our windows open and run the house fan and it was great. What I don’t remember was if that was in spring or fall. The memory makes me believe it was a summer-long experience, but in reality, I think it was only probably for a few days, in the afternoon or at night after things cooled down. I do remember laying in bed with a box fan in the window set on high. Was I miserable? I don’t remember.
Truth, the summer heat has always bothered me. I’ve had at least two moments that I’ll admit to that I became sick from heat exposure. Once after an extreme sunburn I got deep-sea fishing when I was 13, but boy that was an awesome brown tan before it all peeled off. Another time in my 40s when we went tent camping in July. Guess I should have watched the weather on that trip as it turned out to be one of those fluke “Hottest Weekend on Record” events. Nothing like getting sick and the spouse having to break down camp and load everything up so we can head back home. I was passed out sick in the truck with the air conditioning running and wasn’t able to keep anything down. Not a memorable experience I want to encounter again.

So, what bothers me? I guess it would have to be the heat and humidity of summer. We are again under an extreme heat advisory this weekend.
Drink plenty of water and stay cool!

I experienced heat exhaustion once during a hike, and it’s not a pleasant experience. Stay cool!
