Exploring Fossils from Eutaw Formation in Alabama

Fossils from Montgomery County, Alabama

  • Dated from the Eutaw Formation
  • 75-85 Million years ago, probably a Tuesday.
  • These fossils were collected by me on April 4, 1999
  • Information verified through the Geological Survey of Alabama, Tuscaloosa

While sorting through a ton of old photos I found a very old blog post that I made back in 1999. The blog no longer exists but I had saved all the HTML pages. I thought I’d share a little of what I’d posted about so long ago. I may get the fossils out of storage and take some better resolution photos but for now enjoy the classic oldies that we thought were cutting edge back then.

Close to where we used to live there was a place on a vacant piece of public land that had a sandy out cropping. The sand was very white and unusual for our area which is mostly red clay. Now we know that this was in fact beach sand from an ocean that covered Alabama millions of year ago.

After a little digging through the sand that had fallen to the ground we found various fossils. Some are different types of mollusks, sea biscuits (like a puffy sand dollar), and various other sea creatures.

My favorites are the shark teeth.

Clam, oyster or mussel shells on the right.

The round ones on the left are sand dollars. Also shown are shark teeth.

Have you ever found fossils in your area?
