DIY Upcycled Vintage Suitcase Side Table with Storage

Boho, chic, eclectic, weird, unique, or just cute! I’ve always wanted to make one of these unique little side tables. It was so quick and easy that I may make another one into a cat bed. The trick for that one would be to get shorter legs and secure the lid so that it will remain open. I won’t bore you with a lot of details or the history of this little blue suitcase that may have been owned by a cute little grandmother who traveled via Amtrak train twice a year on holidays to visit the grandkids in upstate New York.. let’s just jump to the fun stuff.

Blue Vintage Suitcase that I found at a thrift store for a couple of dollars several years ago.
To provide support and something for the legs to attach to within the suitcase I covered a piece of Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) with a scrap piece of fabric and stapled the fabric in place.  For more permanent placement, the MDF could be glued to the inside of the suitcase.  I did not glue it just in case I decide to change the fabric inside at a later time.

I found some hairpin legs on Amazon that I liked and these were attached making sure the screws used were not too long but attached firmly to the MDF inside the suitcase.  The MDF board that I used was not quite thick enough for the screw that came with the legs so I ended up replacing it with shorter wood screws.  If you are interested  I found these 16-inch iron hairpin legs online.  It is the perfect height for a side table.
Inside the suitcase after attaching the legs. I will be adding new elastic to the little pouch inside the suitcase so that it can be used to hold items if needed for storage.
