Hanging Fuchsias: The Perfect Summer Flowering Beauty for the Garden

Blooming vibrant magenta and purple flowers, fuchsias (Fuchsia spp.) are unrivaled hanging plants. Most fuchsias are tropical plants, however, a few varieties can take light frosts. Fuchsias are related to the plant family which includes maples and plants in the mulberry family. You can grow fuchsias as annuals or perennials, depending on your location and the species or hybrid you choose.

Growing Location

The best location to grow your fuchsia plant is in an area that receives partial sun to full shade and has well-draining soil.

Water Requirements

Fuchsias require frequent watering, especially when they are grown in containers. It’s best to water fuchsias in the morning so the leaves have time to dry before nightfall.

Fertilization

Fertilize your fuchsia every two weeks with a half-strength solution of water-soluble fertilizer.

Cold Hardiness

Most fuchsias are not cold-hardy and will not survive temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius). If you live in an area with colder winters, you might be better off growing fuchsias in containers so you can bring them inside when the temperature begins to drop. Or, you could look for cold hardy fuchsia varieties to grow.
