Today was one heck of a day for trailblazing we took on the challenge of marking out a whopping 600 yards of trail in scorching Central Alabama weather. Spoiler alert: we survived the heat, a slithery surprise, and got the job done!
First things first, let’s talk about the weather. Can you believe it? We chose one of the hottest days, with the mercury soaring to a sizzling 98 degrees Fahrenheit. But guess what? That didn’t stop us! Armed with our determination, plenty of bug spray, and hats, we tackled the task at hand with unwavering enthusiasm.
Marking the trail was no small feat, but we need to get this part of the task taken care of for part two of this trail build. We marked and unmarked trees using trail tape to try and get the path where we wanted it but with enough room to make wide turns when needed. We set out on the journey to make our mark on our wilderness and we survived.

Amid the sweaty exertion, we couldn’t help but take moments to admire the natural wonders around us. The vibrant greenery of oaks, maples, sweet gum trees, chirping birds, and the occasional wildlife encounter made the experience all the more rewarding. Speaking of wildlife encounters, you won’t believe the surprise we stumbled upon!
One of the essential tasks on our to-do list was checking on the trusty tent that serves as our base camp. It’s like a second home to us during these visits. Out of the blue, while I was opening up the tent so that it could air out some we found a snake’s shed skin right inside the tent door! Now, let me tell you, it’s not every day you get a sneak peek into the life of a snake – pun intended. I will also not admit that I let out a little scream when I saw it! We’ve been camping in this area for four years, and this was our first encounter with a snake. But hey, no harm done, and it added a touch of excitement to our day. On the plus side, it will keep down the rodent population as long as it doesn’t decide to take up residence in our tent!

Luckily, everything inside was in great condition, except for the uninvited snake souvenir. We’ll just have to be extra cautious when we unzip next time!
Apart from dealing with the snake surprise, we also had to tackle the maintenance of our rainwater barrel. A 45-50-gallon container full of water is no joke, especially when it needs to be leveled out. But with a little teamwork, we managed to get it sitting straight and proud, ready to collect the next downpour and quench our thirst for adventure. Rainwater collection on the property is new but has come in handy to wash hands and to cool off your arms and neck when it is so hot outside. Not even an hour after we made it home I checked the weather and the area where our tent is was getting a very heavy downpour of rain.
Now, let’s talk about the real MVP of the day – my old CamelBak filled with ice-cold water. Believe me when I say, this little lifesaver was a game-changer. Every time I took a sip, it felt like a burst of energy surging through my veins. Staying hydrated under the blazing sun was crucial, and thanks to my CamelBak, we made it through without any heat-related issues. Always take water with you even if you think the time outdoors will be short. Stay hydrated!
After a couple hours of hard work and a hint of snake-induced adrenaline, we finally marked out those 600 yards of trail. We felt like true pioneers, carving our way through our private wilderness.
Sure, we came home exhausted, our skin a little salt covered from all the sweat, but our spirits were soaring high. The satisfaction of a job well done and the memories of our unexpected snake encounter will be etched in our minds forever.
So, here’s to more trailblazing adventures, Central Alabama’s fiery summers, and the sweet triumphs that come with overcoming nature’s surprises. Until next time, keep exploring, and remember to bring your trusty CamelBak or water bottle – you’ll thank me later!
