Yesterday afternoon we headed into town after work. We wanted to get dinner at one of the local restaurants overlooking the Coosa River. We stuffed ourselves with wings, corn nuggets, and onion rings. Then, we decided to take a little detour before heading home. On the west side of the Coosa River from Wetumpka are the remains of Lock 31. It was built in the late 1800s. The lock was soon pushed to the side due to the expansion of railroad service for moving goods and people.

Lock 31, a hidden gem, is nestled in the heart of Wetumpka, Alabama. It holds a significant place in the state’s history. This historic lock is located just below the iconic Bibb Graves Bridge.
It is a statement to Alabama’s rich past. It is also a picturesque spot for visitors seeking a glimpse into the state’s waterway heritage. When first constructed a lock keepers house was built directly above the lock. The house along with the old steel bridge is no longer standing.
