Prattville owes its existence to Daniel Pratt, a successful industrialist and entrepreneur from New Hampshire. In the early 19th century, Pratt recognized the potential for harnessing the power of the nearby Autauga Creek to drive industrial machinery. In 1839, he purchased land along the creek and founded Prattville, Alabama.
One of the key components of Pratt’s industrial vision was the construction of a large cotton gin factory. Completed in 1848, this factory became the heart of the Daniel Pratt Mill complex. The mill utilized the water power from Autauga Creek to operate machinery for processing cotton and other agricultural products.

Pratt invested in new technologies and machinery, making the mill one of the most advanced industrial facilities in the region. The mill’s products included not only cotton gins but also textiles, flour, and other goods.

Daniel Pratt died in 1873, but his legacy lived on in Prattville and beyond. The Daniel Pratt Mill continued to operate under various ownerships throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although the original mill complex no longer exists in its entirety, remnants of the site can still be seen in Prattville today.
