Well, I got a little thrifty this weekend. I emptied the rice I’d purchased into glass jars so that it stays fresh and doesn’t attract any pantry moths. The rice came in its own burlap bag with a zipper top and handles. I couldn’t just throw it away. I decided to repurposed it. I added a little cotton liner. Now you have your very own bag for keeping your Kindle or Nook safe from scratches!

All in all, it took only about an hour to do by hand since I don’t own a sewing machine. Wash by hand and dry the bag before starting to remove any leftover rice dust.

Here are step-by-step instructions for adding a cloth liner to your small zippered rice bag to create a functional carrying case for a Kindle or for just turning your bag into an all purpose carrier:
Materials you’ll need:
- Small zippered rice bag with handles
- Fabric for the liner (choose a soft, non-abrasive fabric like cotton or fleece)
- Scissors
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Pins
- Optional: Velcro or snap buttons for closure if your bag doesn’t have a zipper
Steps:
- Measure the rice bag: Lay your rice bag flat on a table and measure its dimensions – length, width, and height. These measurements will help you cut the fabric for the liner.
- Cut the fabric: Using the measurements from step 1, cut two pieces of fabric for the liner. One piece will be for the main body of the bag. The other piece will be for the flap that folds over the top of the Kindle.
- Sew the liner: Place the two pieces of fabric together with their right sides facing each other. Sew around three sides, leaving one of the shorter ends open. This will create a pouch-like structure.
- Attach the flap (optional): If you want a flap to cover the Kindle when it’s in the bag, fold over one of the short ends of the liner fabric. This will create the flap. You can adjust the length of the flap based on your preference. Sew along the sides to secure it.
- Fit the liner into the rice bag: Turn the rice bag inside out so that the zipper is on the inside. Slip the fabric liner into the rice bag, making sure it fits snugly.
- Secure the liner: Use pins to secure the liner to the inside of the rice bag along the top edge. This will prevent the liner from shifting around when you insert or remove your Kindle.
- Sew the liner to the rice bag: Using a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew along the top edge of the rice bag to attach the liner. Be careful to sew close to the edge so that the stitches are not visible from the outside.
- Add closure (optional): If you want to keep your Kindle secure inside the bag, you can add a closure. Sew a piece of Velcro or attach snap buttons to the flap and the front of the bag.
- Trim any excess fabric: Trim any excess fabric or loose threads to give your carrying case a clean finish.
- Test it out: Once you’ve finished sewing, turn the bag right side out and test it with your Kindle to make sure it fits properly and that the closure works effectively.
And there you have it! You’ve successfully transformed your small zippered rice bag into a functional carrying case for your Kindle. Enjoy using your custom-made creation!
