A few years ago I was using a liquid laundry detergent that I made. I thought about doing this again but now I have a new HE front-loading washer. After a little research, here’s my current test recipe. It includes 1 cup each of borax, washing soda, Oxy booster, and Purex crystals. I also use one bar of grated Fels-naptha. More to come after a few loads of laundry.

Here’s the recipe for making homemade laundry soap using the ingredients mentioned above:
Homemade Laundry Detergent
Materials
- 1 bar Fels-Naptha soap grated
- 1 cup Borax
- 1 cup Washing soda
- 1 cup Oxy booster
- 1 cup Purex crystals optional, for fragrance
Instructions
- Grate the Fels-Naptha soap using a cheese grater or food processor. You want it finely grated to ensure it dissolves easily in the wash.
- In a large bowl or container, combine the grated Fels-Naptha soap with the Borax, washing soda, and Oxy booster. Mix well to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed.
- If desired, add the Purex crystals to the mixture for a pleasant fragrance. Mix thoroughly to combine.
- Transfer the mixture to an airtight container for storage. A large mason jar or plastic container works well for this purpose.
- To use, add approximately 2 tablespoons to each load of laundry. You may need to adjust the amount depending on the size and soil level of your laundry.
- Store the homemade laundry detergent in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight to prevent clumping.
Note: This homemade laundry soap is suitable for use in standard and high-efficiency (HE) washing machines. If you have particularly sensitive skin or allergies, test a small amount of the soap on a patch of skin. Do this before using it for your entire laundry.
