Talladega Gingerbread

Recipe from the Purefoy Hotel Cook Book Talladega Alabama 1941

Ingredients
  

  • cup shortening
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 1 tsp soda
  • ½ cup sour milk
  • cups flour
  • 2 tsp ginger
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ sp salt

Method
 

  1. Cream shortening, add sugar gradually.
  2. Add beaten egg mixed with molasses.
  3. Dissolve soda in the sour milk.
  4. Mix and sift flour, ginger, cinnamon, and salt together, and add alternately with the sour milk to the first mixture.
  5. Pour into greased loaf pan.
  6. Bake in a moderate oven (350 °F) for 20 to 30 minutes.
  7. This can be made at breakfast time and baked to serve hot for dinner or supper, by keeping it in the ice box. Serves 6-8.
